This is a fine Country song with one of the topics the format is famous for, alcoholism; but one that actually isn’t used all that much. Oh, sure we got a lot of drinkin’ songs, but they’re all about partyin’ and good times. Songs about the pitfalls, the darker side are as rare as ice in the desert. And I don’t recall any song ever addressing the reality of how young most alcoholics begin boozing. He’s 14 at the start. And at the end of the song, nothing is really resolved. He wants to stop, but can’t. That is real life, sad to say. The song is beautifully constructed and delivered.
