He was with Steel Magnolias, out as a solo he gives us something that’s grittier and cooler than anything the group did. There’s a Skynyrd vibe to this record. Normally, I don’t much like that because the guys that try it almost always go overboard and smear and obscure the lyrics with a rock mix. ‘Nuther words, they just get too loud. He gets it right. If you wanna be Country, people gotta be able to understand all the words. Country boogie is better when we know every word the guy’s singing. The record’s a long shot, not being on a major lable, but it sounds full of potential to me.
