I’d Love To Be Your Last-Gretchen Wilson (Redneck Records/C05)

Is this the best thing she’s ever done? I’d vote for that. At this moment, it’s not a single. I don’t know if it is planned to be. It’s a track from the current album and it is truly great, a total change from the hell-raisin’, butt-kickin, hard-drinkin’ biker chick image everybody has in their minds when they hear her name. The record is as soft and simple as can be. It’s just her and an acoustic guitar, mostly. About 2/3rds of the way thru, a cello, then a soft violin come in with gentle sweetness. It is a very intimate and very adult love song. The lyric explains they’ve both been thru it before, rocky relationships that didn’t work out. Now this time, this night, with this person, she thinks she’s finally about to get it right. She’s saying directly, but without the specific words, that she wishes they were both virgins again, that this was the first time for each of them. It is as delicate and romantic an adult love song as has ever been sung. If women don’t go crazy for this song then the sun don’t rise in the east.

(note:  this song first appeared on Clay Walker’s “Fall” album)
