Speaking of stretching the boundries, if anybody but Kenny had gotten their hands on this song, co-written by David Lee Murphy, and if they’d started with a rough draft of this arrangement, I expect they’d have totally mucked it up with a heavy-handed production, an over-loud mix and some self-indulgent guitar riff. Kenny’s made a very interesting record with it. It’s an avant-garde exercise, really; quite unusual for a Country record. None but a highly familiar voice like this could stand a prayer of getting it past the gate-keepers. Kenny certainly will; it should be the most added song of the week. I don’t know that this’ll be a long-legged record, the hum-a-hook is there, but it is a little bit of an odd one.
