Staying’s Worse Than Leaving-Sunny Sweeney (Republic/Nashville)

She co-wrote it with master Radney Foster and Jay Clementi and it’s as good as 21st Century Country songwriting gets. There’ve been a gazillion songs about breaking up and finding fresh new words and phrases to express the pain and scars of such an event ain’t no easy task. They’ve certainly done it with this one. I knew it was a fine piece of work when I first heard the album and added this song the to Edge list last June. I’ve heard it quite much since then but the greatness of the lyrics didn’t really hit me until I read them through when the single arrived this week. Got us some Country Shakespeare here, fans. And the arrangement backs it up just the way it oughta be. Simple, smooth, clean and honest.
