This one is just out today and the first impression is a solid one. He don’t sound Nashville-y much at all, but solid Texas Country. This is what you get down at the Gruene Dance Hall and over at the Cheatham Street Warehouse where Strait played his first gigs. Phifer’s voice is honest in the same way Zac Brown’s is. The lyric is interesting and I especially like the guitar solo which is rough and raw without a hint of a slick, perfect, paid-by-the-hour studio session man. Sounds like the picker had a few belts in his belly when he got to it and he really means it. Watch it.
