Your Ol’ Lady’s Gone-Branch & Dean (SSM Nashville)

Clearly the most interesting new record of the week. When I heard the line “ain’t nothin’ wrong with hip-hop”, my gut response was: “ohhhh, yes there is! That stuff sucks!” Then, the rest of the song made me near ’bout forget that, though. The record is the best Hank Williams tribute I’ve heard in years. He’s strongly referenced, though not directly named. And the yodel is channeled right through a worm hole from the early ’50s, but packaged in such a way that makes it retro-cool. It might not be a national radio record, but it surely is hot n’ spicy and a worthy ear-treat for Country listenin’.
